What is the white stuff in my kettle?
If you live anywhere with hard water you may start to notice a white chalky substance building up in your kettle. This is often called “limescale” or “calcium buildup”. It’s perfectly harmless and just means that you have water with a higher mineral content that can leave this residue behind. But don’t worry, the kettle is probably one of the easiest things to clean in your home! And best of all, theirs no scrubbing required!

- cloth/paper-towel
How to clean your kettle with vinegar
- Dump out all the water in your kettle.
- Fill the kettle half way with equal parts water and vinegar.
- Turn your kettle on and allow it to finish a cycle.
- Dip your cloth or paper towel in the vinegar water solution and drape it over the spout of the kettle, covering every area where there is limescale buildup.
- Allow the vinegar/water solution to sit for 10 minutes (more or less depending on the amount of buildup).
- Use a little bit of the vinegar solution to quickly wipe down the outside (careful it may still be hot!).
- Thoroughly rinse out your kettle and it should be sparkling clean and ready to use!
- If you have a particularly heavy build-up, simply repeat the process until all of the limstone is removed.
How often should I clean my kettle?
This really depends on your water and your preference. I clean my kettle once a month or so when I notice a light build-up. You could do it as often as every week if you wanted to. If you clean your kettle regularly the process shouldn’t take that long, simply allowing the kettle to complete a cycle could be enough to lift off any limescale without needing to let it sit.
